NPO’s NEEDS FINANCIAL STABILITY – Deputy Minister Ntuli

Deputy Minister of Social Development Maria Ntuli

The sustainability of non-profit organisations plays a crucial role in reducing service delivery backlogs in the communities, the Deputy Minister of Social Development Maria Ntuli said at the North West Provincial NPO dialogue held at Rustenburg Civic Centre.

“Many non-profit organisations in rural communities struggle for survival even though they render good service to our people,” Ntuli said, adding that NPO’s render  indispensable services on behalf of the government, especially the services rendered to orphans, child headed households, the vulnerable groups including women, children and people with disabilities.

Ntuli said it is time departmental officials seek creative ways to simplify application forms for registration of NPO and business plans and teach them financial accountability.

Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi, MEC for Social Development, Women, Children and People with Disabilities called on to all the NPO’s to raise their challenges with the provincial department to get the necessary assistance,” Mokomele-Mothibi said.

“We are more than willing as the department to assist NPO’s. It is our mandate to sustain them financially so that they could render effective services to our people,” Mokomele-Mothibi said.

NPO’s representatives said most of their organisations have common financial problems to render the services as they should. North West has more than 4 580 NPO’s rendering social welfare services to the communities in the four district municipalities. Meanwhile national Department of Social Development is in the process of hosting national dialogues on NPO’s in August this year.

Job rape man arrested

A 31-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping young women seeking employment around Rustenburg in North West, police said.

Colonel Emelda Setlhako said the man was taken into custody in Mogwase after a tip-off.

“He is alleged to have been luring young women by falsely promising them work in the mines around Rustenburg, taking their cellphones and demanding money before raping them in the nearby bushes.”

Setlhako said that on May 11, the man had approached a 19-year-old woman in Rustenburg, promising her that he would help her get a job at Impala platinum mine, as his brother was working there.

They agreed to meet on May 16, for an appointment with the “brother”.

“(They) boarded a taxi to Mogwase. On arrival, the suspect lured the victim to the bushes under false pretence that they were taking an alternative road to the mine. Whilst in the bushes, he allegedly raped the victim.”

Setlhako said the second victim was raped in similar circumstances on June 9.

She said the third woman was the cousin of one of the two victims. The man had met her in Randfontein Mall on Thursday, and she alerted the police.
