It is now all systems go for the “one family, one food garden” campaign as the MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Desbo Mohono, will be taking this initiative to Boitumelong location in Bloemhof, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, today.
MEC Mohono will as part of the day’s activities, encourage the identified destitute households to plant vegetables through the use of Earth-boxes, resuscitate a local community vegetable garden, and deliver four (4) slasher machines to the District’s Local Municipalities for management of grass along the Districts’ main roads.
Launched about a weeks ago, the “one family, one food garden” campaign which is aimed at reinforcing the efforts of reducing poverty and hunger among rural communities through the establishment of vegetable gardens, was pronounced as one of the Department’s priority programmes for this financial year, during the recent tabling of the Departmental Budget Vote speech.
MEC Mohono says the establishment of vegetable gardens for impoverished households is a significant approach towards achieving the goal of sustainable food security and the realisation of the right to have access to adequate and nutritious food.
“Our target is to establish 1500 vegetable gardens throughout the Province this year, and the race has certainly begun”, declared Mohono.
