“Three unknown men pointed firearms at the victim and two of his friends in the street near the tavern on Saturday night,” said spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.
“When they fled, the victim was running behind his friends when gunshots were heard, and it was later realised that he had been shot several times.”
Mokgwabone said the murder was not linked to the recent cases involving the killing of union officials in Marikana.
Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union regional chairperson Mawethu Steven was shot dead in March.
Last week, a National Union of Mineworkers shop steward was shot dead while his colleague was wounded in an attack at Lonmin’s Wonderkop hostel.
“The latest murder case is not linked to any of the recently reported cases where union officials were killed in the area, although the victim is an employee of Lonmin.”
The 32-year-old was declared dead on the scene.
No arrests had been made.
